Christchurch police have released the name of the skateboarder killed in an accident in Loburn, north of Rangiora, last night.

He was 20-year-old Jamie Richard Haggath.

Police think the young man may have been trying to retrieve his skateboard from the road when he was hit by a car.

"Initial inquiries indicate the male had walked into the path of a vehicle, while attempting to retrieve his skateboard which was lying on the roadway."

Sergeant Colin Stuart said Police are appealing for witnesses that may have seen the Mr Haggath skateboarding down Carrs Road.

Police said speed or alcohol were not believed to be involved in the crash.
