In a bid to manage the Sumatran tiger breed, Auckland and Hamilton zoos are swapping tigers.

Oz, 9, who relocated from Tel Aviv to Auckland in 2006, will move to Hamilton Zoo to be paired up with Sali, 5, who arrived from Dreamworld last August.

There are now fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers remaining in the wild.

It's hoped the young pair will make an important contribution to the Sumatran Tiger Global Species Management Plan with successful breeding.

Jaka, a male Sumatran tiger from Hamilton Zoo, will relocate to Auckland Zoo.
