New Zealand has a new world champion - surf lifesaver Laura Quilter.
Competing in day one of the 2013 International German Cup, the surf lifesaver set a new world record for the 50m manikin carry, 34.74 seconds. Quilter then went on to take another first place in the women's 100m manikin carry.
Quilter, 21, told the Herald on Sunday last night there was only one way to describe how she felt today, and that was "awesome".
The manikin carry requires competitors to race while holding a 50kg dummy.
The Wainui club member said she spent 18 hours a week swim training and began surf lifesaving at the age of 5 but was fairly new to manikin carrying. The swim teacher and part-time student at Massey in Albany said she knew she had prepared well for Germany.
