Thunderstorms may dampen Guy Fawkes night - MetService

By Heather McCracken

A high risk of thunderstorms forecast for Auckland and the upper North Island could make Guy Fawkes night a fizzer for fireworks.

MetService said an active front was expected to sweep across Northland and Auckland this afternoon, bringing a high risk of thunderstorms.

The storms could be accompanied by heavy rain and strong wind gusts of 90 to 110km/h, and possibly small tornadoes.

There is a risk of severe thunderstorms ahead of the front over east Northland and northeast Auckland this evening, which could be accompanied by damaging wind gusts in excess of 110km/h, tornadoes and downpours.

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for Northland, Auckland and Great Barrier Island.
