A 23-year-old man who was killed in a two-car crash north of Wellington yesterday has been named by police.

Paraparaumu man Deane Wilson was driving when his car and another collided on Takapu Rd in Grenada North, near Tawa, shortly after 3pm yesterday.

He died at the scene while his passenger, a 27-year-old man, was taken to Wellington Hospital with serious injuries.

The passenger was discharged from hospital this morning.

The crash followed heavy rain which caused flooding and congestion on the capital's roads yesterday.

Police said the weather would be one of a number of factors examined, but the cause of the crash would not be known until an investigation was complete.

The police serious crash unit was continuing its examination of the scene today.
