A Kiwi sailor is being questioned by police in Singapore after an altercation in a bar.

The crew member from the navy frigate HMNZS Te Mana was with fellow crew at the Fern and Kiwi, a waterfront venue popular with expat New Zealanders on Clarke Quay last week when a fracas broke out.

Navy spokeswoman Lieutenant Commander Vicki Rendall refused to be drawn on details.

"There was an incident involving one of our sailors in Singapore last week," she said.

"We've been co-operating with the Singapore police and there are New Zealand Defence Force staff who have been liaising on that as well."

"The Navy generally has high expectations of our personnel and we certainly don't condone the behaviour of the individual involved."

No charges have been laid at this stage.

The sailor was not in custody, but remained in Singapore to co-operate with police when the rest of his crew left for Vietnam this week.
