A police officer has been left injured after a 23-year-old man allegedly fled from police in a stolen vehicle, then rammed police cars when he was finally brought to a stop early this morning.

The Wainuiomata man was spotted driving a stolen vehicle about 3am before it was stopped in a residential street in Wainuiomata.

As police approached the car it accelerated away.

Road spikes were then used to slow down the vehicle, allowing officers to surround the car and bring it to a stop.

However, as three officers approached the vehicle, the driver allegedly tried to escape by ramming police vehicles, allegedly swiping the officers.

One received bruising to his leg.

The driver, and another man, were finally arrested after the car was again stopped in Lower Hutt.

The 23-year-old appeared in Lower Hutt District Court today facing numerous charges relating to the incident, and has been remanded in custody until the end of January.

One police car is out of service with substantial damage.
