One person has died after a car smashed into a tree on a rural Waikato road today.

Firefighters arrived at the crash site on Te Pahu road in Karamu at about 5:00pm and found the driver - who was the sole occupant - dead.

After searching the area, about 20 kilometers west of Hamilton, no other fatalities or injured people were found.

Police said the vehicle appeared to have lost control on a bend and crashed into a tree.

Diversions are in place at Old Mountain Road and Clothier Road. Serious crash investigators are at the scene.

The deceased person has yet to be identified.
