A 41-year-old prison inmate has been charged after a Hawke's Bay prison officer was attacked on Monday.

The officer suffered bruising and swelling to the head and face following the attack about 9am.

Police today said the inmate has been charged with injuring with intent to injure.

He will appear in Hastings District Court on Tuesday.

Police have finished speaking with the victim and witnesses to the assault, and have completed a scene examination at the prison.

The officer was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.

In July, another Hawke's Bay Prison officer was repeatedly punched in the head by an inmate.

The male guard was conducting a strip search on the inmate when he was assaulted, suffering fractures to his eye socket and cheekbone.
