One dead after Christchurch house blaze

One person is dead following a house fire in the Christchurch suburb of Spreydon last night.

Fire Service spokesperson Rewai Grace said multiple reports of a house fire on Clent Lane were received about 10.23pm, with one person believed to be in the building.

On arrival the house was "well alight", with flames coming out of the windows.

About 22.45pm it was confirmed a person had died in the blaze, Mr Grace said.

St John ambulance spokesperson Ian Henderson said several other people were assessed at the scene, but no one was taken to hospital.

Firefighters left the scene about 3.30am, Mr Grace said.

Fire Safety began an initial investigation last night, and will return to the scene with police this morning.
