The boyfriend of a Hawke's Bay woman found dead in Australia has been charged with her murder.

The body of Debara Martin, 43, was found at a house in New South Wales on May 4 after police had pulled over a drink-driver.

Adam John Kennedy, 24, was arrested after members of the public reported a car being driven erratically.

Kennedy failed a roadside breath test when stopped in his Holden Commodore.

After interviewing him, police were led to a house in Bowraville where mum-of-one Martin - who was recovering from breast cancer and living in Toormina - was discovered about 3.15am.

Kennedy later appeared via video link at the Port Macquarie Local Court charged with murder as well as drug and firearm offences.

The chef was denied bail and will appear back in court next month.
