An investigation has begun after the death of a Kiwi soldier in Afghanistan today.

Defence Minister Dr Jonathan Coleman said the death was not the result of a combat operation and did not appear to involve anyone else.

The soldier was serving with the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Bamiyan. He died about 11am at Forward Patrol Base Romero, several hours from the team's headquarters.

His next of kin were being informed tonight and more information would be given at a media conference in Wellington tomorrow.

Dr Coleman said he was saddened to learn of the soldier's death and the Government offered its condolences to the man's family and loved ones.

The soldier had been in the 19th rotation which has been in Bamiyan since September last year.

Chief of Defence Force Lieutenant General Rhys Jones extended his sympathies to the the family, colleagues and friends of the solider.

"Our soldiers continue to acquit themselves magnificently and the New Zealand Provincial Reconstruction Team continues to do great work in Bamiyan Province," he said.
