5.6 quake shakes lower South Island

A moderate but deep earthquake has been recorded near the coast of Fiordland tonight.

The magnitude 5.6 tremor struck at 8.25pm, and was centred 50 kilometres north-west of Te Anau.

There were no reports of any damage.
