A 15-month-old boy has been bitten by a dog in the Bay of Plenty today.

The dog bit the child at a Tawa St property in Edgecumbe about 10.22am, a St John ambulance spokesman said.

The boy was taken to Whakatane Hospital by car while the dog's 39-year-old owner was brought in later by ambulance, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The boy has been treated for his injuries and would be able to go home later today.

The owner was still being assessed this morning.

Police were at the hospital to speak with witnesses to the incident.
