Residents of a lodging house heard a fight, shortly before a man was stabbed in the heart and bled to death in a hallway, a court has heard.
Martin Dennis Olley has pleaded not guilty in the High Court at Auckland today to murdering John Chambers.
Crown prosecutor Kevin Glubb told the jurors that Olley and Mr Chambers had returned to the Eden Park lodge after Mr Chambers had been trying to swap a necklace for drugs in September last year.
Mr Glubb said the deal fell through and the two friends were sitting in the communal kitchen on the third floor of the lodge when residents heard sounds of a fight and furniture being moved.
He said Peter Tupuola will tell the court that he went to investigate and saw Mr Chambers with a knife but after being confronted, Mr Chambers handed the knife over.
