A fire at an abandoned South Auckland house is being treated as suspicious but is not thought to have been caused by fireworks.

The house on Maich Rd in Manurewa was well ablaze when firefighters arrived just after 7pm yesterday, Fire Service northern communications shift manager Jaron Phillips said.

A fire investigator would this morning try to establish the cause.

Mr Phillips said the fire was considered suspicious but was not believed to be related to fireworks.
