Dunedin police need help identifying man hit by car

Police want help identifying a young man who is unconscious in hospital with serious head injuries after being knocked down by a car in north Dunedin early this morning.

The man was hit by a car at the corner of Opoho Road and North Road at about 2.40am today. The driver of the car stopped and called emergency services.

The man is described as 20 to 25 years of age, of olive complexion and about 177cm tall with a lean and athletic build.

His ethnicity is not known, but he has a distinctive tattoo in Japanese script on the right side of his torso.

He was wearing black and white Nike basketball shorts.

"Police are keen to identify the young man as soon as possible so that we can make contact with his next of kin," said Duty Senior Sergeant Ed Baker.

"If you think you know who this person is, please get in touch with us as soon as possible."

Police were still investigating the cause and circumstances of the crash, Snr Sgt Baker said.
