A second body has been found at Lake Arapuni near Putaruru today, two weeks after two fishermen went missing at the lake.

James Roberts, 45, and Jordan Pooley, 21, have not been seen since they set off from Jones Landing at Lake Arapuni on the morning of August 28.

The alarm was raised three days later when Mr Roberts' dog Maggie made a 10km trek back home and was seen by a neighbour.

A body was found on Friday and another body was found this morning, Inspector Steve Bullock said.

A post-mortem examination would be completed on both bodies in Auckland, when they would also be formally identified.

The boat the pair were in has not been found, and it may not ever be known what went wrong, Mr Bullock said.

"While this is obviously a tragic outcome to what should have been a pleasant fishing trip on a Sunday afternoon, the discovery of the bodies does provide some closure for the families of the missing men."

Police would remain at the lake today to complete their operation.
