Injured bus driver's wife grateful to quick-thinking helpers

The wife of a critically injured Hamilton bus driver has thanked a quick-thinking contractor and medical staff who helped save her husband's life.

The bus driver, named today as 52-year-old Ross McSheffrey, was pinned under his own bus for about 10 minutes when it rolled over him outside Waikato Hospital yesterday.

A nearby contractor used his digger to lift the bus off Mr McSheffrey and an off duty nurse gave him oxygen as they waited for emergency services to arrive.

Mr McSheffrey's wife Trish McSheffrey says she is thankful to all those who helped at the scene of the accident.

That included two contractors and Waikato DHB staff, many of whom she has thanked in person, she said.

She also paid tribute to the medical staff at Waikato Hospital's intensive care unit, where her husband's condition remains critical but stable.

Mr McSheffrey is expected to make a "long recovery" from his injuries, she said.

The police serious crash unit and a commercial vehicle investigation team are making inquiries into the accident.

Pavlovich Coachlines chief executive Bernard Pavlovich says his company will also investigate.
