A 19-year-old man was killed and five others injured when a four-wheel-drive vehicle rolled on State Highway 1 near Taupo yesterday afternoon.
Constable Mark Halewood of the Taupo police said the accident happened at about 2.50pm, on State Highway 1 south of Waitahanui, 12km south-east of Taupo.
The Toyota Prado four-wheel-drive was travelling towards Taupo when it left the road and rolled up to three times, causing extensive damage.
A 19-year-old Papamoa man, who was in the rear seat, died at the scene.
A 16-year-old male passenger with serious injuries was airlifted to Rotorua Hospital by the Lion Foundation Rescue Helicopter.
The four remaining occupants were taken to Taupo Hospital with minor injuries.
Weather conditions at the time of the crash were fine and the road was dry.
Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash, but inquiries were continuing, Mr Halewood said.
