Sir John Kennedy-Good, mayor of Lower Hutt from 1970 to 1986, made a point of keeping the Hutt apart from neighbouring Wellington City.
Sir John, KBE and QSO, a dentist, ended up in local body politics through involvement in efforts to fluoridate the water supply in Lower Hutt, one of the earliest areas to do so.
He also served on the Wellington Harbour Board and headed the Wellington branch of the Dental Association. Sir John was knighted in 1983.
