Updated environment management rulebook
People have 10 weeks to have a say on an updated rulebook for the way Northland's water, air, soil and coast are used and managed. Northland Regional Council's Proposed Regional Plan will go public on Wednesday, September 6 at the start of a 10-week consultation period.
The plan will replace three existing regional plans which are over a decade old. Last year a first draft of the plan was released to "road-test" it. It covers proposed rules for coastal works, earthworks, water use and discharges to air, land and water. From Wednesday the plan will be on www.nrc.govt.nz/newregionalplan. Firefighters save vege store
Firefighters arrived on time to save an old veggie store just south of Whangarei from being completely destroyed in a blaze.
Four fire appliances from Whangarei, Kamo and Hikurangi rushed to Piano Hill Rd about 9am yesterday and entered the gated property by removing a padlock.
Hikurangi deputy fire chief Trevor Gallagher said the building, with three little rooms, was filled with smoke when firefighters arrived. Two windows were broken and a small fire was seen on top of an old wooden desk with stacks of cardboard boxes," he said. A fire investigator was at the scene after firefighters had left.
