Anyone using firearms without regard for public safety should expect to go to jail, a judge has warned.
That's the warning from Judge Greg Davis who jailed a Whangarei man for 18 months.
The court had heard that Damon Johnstone, 34, while drunk, had discharged a gun that resulted in a woman being injured. Johnstone pleaded guilty in the Whangarei District Court to two charges of unlawfully carrying or possessing a firearm and ammunition and one of careless use of a firearm causing injury.
The police summary said Johnstone had been drinking at a house on De Havilland Pl in Onerahi about 10.30pm on February 5 this year.
The female complainant, her partner and their three children were also at the house.
