A group of four Whangarei college students beat 120 teams from around the country after an innovative combination of social media and beekeeping.
The team from Huanui College in Glenbervie, who called themselves Bee in the Scene, won the overall award at the inaugural enterprising Primary Industries Careers Challenge.
The aim of the competition was to have Year 10 students promote the primary industries to their peers.
Holly Cook, Greer Manderson, Ella Harrold and their business studies teacher Vernice Young travelled to Wellington to collect the award from Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy. The fourth member of their team, Zoe Dykzeul, was absent.
Their campaign encouraging students to pursue a career in the apiculture industry, or beekeeping, used social media to disseminate their message. Their marketing campaign also included brochures, advertising and interviews with people in the industry.
