Pedestrians and cyclists were stopped in their tracks when the new footbridge across the Waiarohia Stream was blocked yesterday.
A caller to the Northern Advocate said she had been about to cross when the alarms sounded and a boat approached about 3pm. The gates also shut preventing anyone from crossing. She called the Whangarei District Council and contacted an afterhours worker who told her they were on their way to check the problem.
However, 40 minutes later the bridge was still blocked. The new bridge completes the Loop Walkway between the Town Basin, Port Rd and Riverside Drive. Walkers and cyclists can take advantage of the 4.2km pathway via the bridge, Te Matau a Pohe and Pohe Island.
