Charities are expected to benefit from an increase in a two-day public book sale in Whangarei that raised $28,000 on the first day.
A massive 60,000 books were donated for the annual Zonta book sales at the Forum North last weekend and any leftovers will be handed over to charities, including the Hospice.
An organiser Anne Richards said Saturday's sale of $28,000 was slightly higher than the first day's revenue last year when a total of $33,000 was raised.
All proceeds will go to charities that include School for Teen Parents, Duffy Books and Homes, Women's Refuge, Literacy Whangarei, Choices for Women Books, Specific Learning Disability, Teachers' Reading, Salvation Army's addiction service, Endometriosis, Sweet Louise Breast Cancer Support and Zonta scholarship.
"We're certainly finding that reading isn't going out of fashion. It's still very, very popular," Ms Richards said.
