It will be an emotional day for Northland mum Karen Edwards as she climbs the steps to Parliament to present a protection order petition.
Ms Edwards, from Okaihau, was today scheduled to present a petition signed by 3000 people to Parliament calling for the three strikes legislation to apply to breaches of protection orders.
Those calling for change want tougher penalties for offenders who breach a protection order three times in three years they say should be jailed for a minimum of three years.
If the new law is voted for the first breach would result in a strike warning and the offender's cellphone and computer would be confiscated. If there was a second breach in three years the offender would be made to pay a $5000 fine to the victim or alternatively be jailed for six months.
Under current law a breach of protection order is punishable by a maximum three year jail term.
