Police have revealed 300 tickets were issued to speeding drivers in Northland over the four-day Easter break.
The high number has concerned police who say drivers have not heeded the warning regarding the decreased speed tolerance over the extended Easter/Anzac weekends. A reduced 4km/h speed threshold is being strictly enforced through until 6am next Monday to take in Anzac Day and the following weekend.
While there were no fatal crashes in Northland over Easter police attended 16 minor crashes across the region.
Northland Police Senior Sergeant John Fagan said also of concern was the number of drivers caught over the alcohol limit. Police carried out 93 checkpoints throughout the region over the break and 17 drunk drivers were caught.
"In Northland the majority of our serious and fatal crashes occur as a result of intoxicated drivers, speed and vehicle occupants not wearing seat belts. These are all things that the driver of a vehicle have control over and can reduce the risk to themselves and others they share the road with," Mr Fagan said.
