A road accident is the subject of a murder inquiry after a woman died after a vehicle hit her on a Northland street.
Georgina Manuel, 28, was struck on Pukepoto Rd, Kaitaia, on Tuesday and died in Whangarei Hospital about 5am yesterday. She had been admitted to Kaitaia Hospital, then flown by rescue helicopter to Whangarei.
A 45-year-old man turned himself in to the Whangarei police station shortly before noon yesterday. No charges had been laid as of edition time but police said they not looking for anyone else.
The car thought to have been involved was found in Grigg St, Kaitaia, and subjected to a forensic examination as part of a murder inquiry, not a traffic accident investigation.
Part of Pukepoto Rd, a major thoroughfare, was closed to traffic while police carried out their investigation yesterday. Senior Sergeant Geoff Ryan, officer in charge in Kaitaia, said that Ms Manuel was believed to have been involved in an argument with a man near the intersection of Pukepoto and Bonnett Rd about 10pm on Tuesday.
