An Australian climber was injured when he fell around 200m while abseiling down the summit rocks of Mt Cook yesterday.
It was believed the man's anchor gave way.
He was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital by the WestpacTrust rescue helicopter with suspected head, neck and leg injuries.
His climbing companion suffered cuts and bruises climbing down to aid his friend and was also airlifted out.
Constable Greg Sutherland, of Twizel, said the man fell into a crevasse on the Linda Shelf.
Two Czech climbers saw him fall. One stayed with the injured man and his friend. The other descended to Plateau Hut to raise the alarm.
