Wellingtonians had an early wake-up call, just after 5.30 this morning.
The region was hit by an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, centred 10 km northwest of Waikanae.
Seismologist Ken Gledhill says the quake was 50 km deep.
Kapiti Coast residents report a violent shake and many say things fell from shelves.
In central Wellington it was felt as a jolt followed by a rolling motion.
