Young New Zealand open-wheel racer Richie Stanaway has made the last eight in the Grand Prix shootout in England. The winner will receive a fully funded programme to drive in Europe with Raikonen Robertson Racing to gain knowledge and experience to take part in Formula One testing.
Mentor under siege The fourth and final round of the Demon Energy New Zealand Motocross Championships is in Taranaki and 16-year-old Kayne Lamont wants to close the gap on his mentor and former Grand Prix racer Damien King. Yamaha rider King is 63 points ahead of Lamont and with 75 points up for grabs, the fat lady is just warming up her voice.
MG Classic at Manfeild This weekend 18 cars will line up for the opening round of the 2009/10 MSC F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series and are the main attraction at the 24th annual MG Classic Race Meeting at Manfeild. Racing veteran Ken Smith is back behind the wheel to defend his last season's title. Smith, 67, is in his 53rd season of national level competition.
Pressure on for Gilmour New Zealand rally driver Emma Gilmour will press hard to improve on the third place she has already secured in the 2009 Asia-Pacific Rally Championship. Heading into the series final in China this weekend, she trails second-placed Katsuhiko Taguchi by six points and will need a good result to push him into third.
Nascar veteran still hopeful Fifty-one-year-old veteran Nascar driver Mark Martin is not giving up on overtaking Sprint Cup leader Jimmie Johnson with just two races to go. Martin closed the gap to 73 points on Johnson last time out in Texas when Johnson crashed.
Nine in scholarship field Young rally drivers from Invercargill to Auckland will contest this year's Rally New Zealand Rising Stars Scholarship shootout at the end of November. The nine candidates selected to compete for the $50,000 scholarship package are Stephen Barker (Hamilton, 21), Jordan Burley (Hamilton, 21), Phillip Campbell (Tauranga, 23), David Holder (Invercargill, 20), Tom Hulbert (Kaukapakapa, 25), Jamie Kitzen (Papakura, 23), Kevin Laird (Gore, 24), Scott Rutherford (Te Atatu, 16) and Philip Terry (Invercargill, 23).
