Toyota has launched a hybrid Camry in New Zealand, in two specification levels each with a 2.4-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor. The combination delivers 140kW, which tops other NZ-market Camrys.
The aim is to offer a mid-sized sedan with familiarity - but improved fuel economy - with a claimed 6.0l/100km to Australian standards.
Toyota says buyers get the specification you'd expect from a Camry, including six airbags, ABS and stability control - and for the first time, integrated management for the vehicle dynamics systems.
The $48,990 entry-level car also includes Bluetooth hands-free phone capability and a reversing camera, plus an "energy flow meter" to encourage drivers to cut fuel use.
The top-spec $54,990 i-Tech adds goodies like leather seats and satnav, with the electronic systems partially powered by the solar sun roof as pioneered in the Prius.
Although some hybrid buyers want to advertise their green credentials, others do not. These Camrys don't get specialised wheels, instead they're 16-inch alloys, while the i-Tech has a rear spoiler - ironic for a car that is likely to never need the extra downforce.
They're also fitted with the blue-tinted headlight extensions that are a Toyota hybrid hallmark, while the unique front bumpers are designed to impart aerodynamic benefits.
