Pinot noir varietals have again dominated the Air New Zealand Wine Awards, winning a total of 32 gold medals - more than twice as many as any other varietal.

It's the third consecutive year pinot noir wines have been awarded the highest number of gold medals, something New Zealand Winegrowers' global marketing director Chris Yorke said indicated the varietal was going from strength to strength.

"The quality of pinot noir entries is exceptional in this year's awards," said Yorke.

"The quality of sustainable wines entered is also very exciting as reflected in the high number of pure gold medals awarded."

More than 100 gold medals have been awarded and 39.2 per cent of those were 'pure gold' awards - a category introduced in 2007 to acknowledge medal-winning wines that are 100 per cent sustainably grown and produced.

New rules this year stipulated that wines from the 2010 vintage onwards had to be 100 per cent sustainably produced in both the vineyard and winery.

The introduction of the new criteria led to an increase of almost 140 per cent in sustainable entries compared with last year.

Sauvignon blanc and chardonnay varietals won the highest number of gold awards after pinot noir (14 each), with 13 of the 14 sauvignon blanc winners scooping pure gold awards.

A panel of judges spent three days earlier this month tasting almost 1600 wines from around New Zealand. In addition to the 107 gold medals, 197 silver medals and 384 bronze medals were awarded.

Chair of judges Steve Smith (MW) said the entries in this year's competition were of the highest standard across a wide range of varietals.

"We continue to be able to produce wine of exceptional quality and while the pinot noir class is the highlight for many, we have a number of wines from other varietals that will turn heads," he said.

The best wine in the competition, as well as the winners of the elite gold medals will be announced at a gala dinner in Auckland later this month.
