Elizabeth Kerekere
Green Party candidate for Ikaroa-Rawhiti
Why should people vote for you?
Party vote Green because we need urgent and radical action on climate change, housing, homelessness and addressing poverty. Vote for me to ensure that your Ikaroa-Rāwhiti voice is strongly represented in Parliament and not constrained by big party politics.
What is the single most pressing need in your electorate?
The issues for Māori are complex, interwoven and differ throughout the Ikaroa-Rāwhiti region. The overriding need is for Māori, whānau, hapū and iwi to have a say in addressing those issues in a way that honours our strengths and creativity.
What's your top strength for this role?
As an artist, activist, scholar, organiser and planner, I am driven to collaborate with whānau, community, institutions and government to get things done and create change. I bring my experience on takatāpui, youth development, suicide prevention and violence as it impacts on Ikaroa-Rāwhiti.
Who's your most respected New Zealand politician (living or dead) and why?
Georgina Beyer is my most respected politician because, apart from being the first transgender MP in the world, she brought style and grace to the role on behalf of her constituents as well as pride and visibility to takatāpui and Rainbow identities.
