"People were doing back flips and things but I didn't have anything special to offer. I don't think people should show off too much."
The 2016 Mr Waimarama said, to cull the nerves, he just went out there and acted himself.
"The friends in the crowd cheering me on helped, so people should have a good support crew around."
Mr Flanders enjoyed the overall experience and did not place a strong emphasis on going to the gym and dieting in the lead up to the big day.
Beach day organiser Jason Broome said they were thrilled to announce the return of Mr Waimarama after the success of last year.
It was the first time in more than 10 years a Mr Waimarama was crowned and Mr Broome was excited to see what talent this year would bring.
Alongside the much anticipated catwalk will be other activities keeping family and friends entertained throughout the day.
Mr Broome said they were hoping to create a carnival atmosphere with the addition of a kids zone this year.
"We are excited to add bouncy castles, rides, face painting and other fun activities to the event," Mr Broome said.
During the day people can participate in a variety of competitions with Beach Dig, Sandcastle Competitions and Dash for Cash.
Rescue demonstrations from Waimarama lifeguards and the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter will also keep keen beach goers entertained.
There will be a barbecue lunch and other food vendors providing a range of food and drink keeping people fed and hydrated.
All of the money raised will go directly to the Waimarama Surf Life Saving Club.
The day starts at 10am on January 29.
