Adam Colman is in elite company.
The 18-year-old Hastings Boys' High student is one of just 1 per cent of scouts worldwide to achieve a Queen's Scout award.
This is the highest youth award achievable in the scouting movement throughout the Commonwealth.
"It's been a long process, four years of hard work but it's been incredible," the member of Havelock North Venturers said.
From community service and public speaking, to life skills, driving cars and flying planes, Adam has covered a range of activities.
"The leadership opportunities were amazing."
Adam was charged with looking after the squad of venturers in the Lower North Island.
"I was responsible for about 150 14 to 18-year-olds. I had to run camps and ensure they had the best time possible.
"You learn about yourself and where New Zealand fits into the world."
His father Paul Colman said it was pretty rare.
He was proud of how his son had done.
Adam underwent four months of physical recreation playing soccer and doing gym work.
He is only the second scout in Hawke's Bay to achieve the award in "a number of years".
Adam has been part of the scouts since being a "Kea" at age 5.
The best aspect of the journey for him was the lifelong friendships he made along the way.
"I now have more friends than I can count. I want to live it all over again," he said.
"I would encourage others to take up the Queen's Scouts and just go for it."
