Relay for Life organisers are calling on the public to keep donations flooding in for their favourite teams this month in a final push to beat last year's fundraising effort.
About 1500 people, many dressed in colorful costumes, turned out for the 20-hour Cancer Society fundraising event at the weekend.
The money raised by participating teams goes toward fighting the disease that affects one in three New Zealanders.
An event spokeswoman said the amount raised this year was more than $120,000, and still climbing yesterday afternoon.
The figure was below the more than $160,000 raised last year, but it would be another two weeks before all the donations were accounted for.
Although the event was over, it was still possible to donate to the cause up to the end of this month.
"The website is still open and donations stay open right to the end of March. People can keep donating to their favorite team."
She said this year had seen an influx of online donations for teams, which comprised about one third of total donations.
"Our website donations is over $35,000 as I sit here now. That's a huge change in the way people are fundraising for Relay for Life. It's making it so much easier for teams to raise money - they can email friends and families around the world to get donations."
The Napier Boys' High School team completed the most laps in this year's event: a total of 329km.
