It's possible the next Pope could hail from Central Hawke's Bay, although the potential pontiff laughs off the idea.
The Archbishop of Wellington, John Dew, was included in Pope Francis' announcement this week of 15 bishops and archbishops from around the world who would be elevated to the status of cardinal.
But there is something that sets Cardinal-elect Dew, 66, apart from the other cardinals-to-be. He was born in Waipawa and raised in Waipukurau. "It was a great place to grow up. There was lots of outdoor activity and my parents were heavily involved in sports."
His family were also involved with the local parish, which was to leave a lasting impression on him.
"We grew up very close to the Church. It was just a part of growing up, and it would eventually lead me to become a priest."
