Batten down the hatches - a southwesterly change will herald a chance of hail, thunder and lightning in Hawke's Bay this morning, MetService says.
MetService meteorologist Mariken van Laanen said the change, which would come from the south and track across the region east of Hastings, would bring heavy showers with a risk of hail and thunderstorms.
There was a moderate risk of thunderstorms in the east, and a lower risk about the Hastings and Napier centres.
Showers are expected to continue this afternoon, but the threat of more inclement weather will only last the morning.
The change comes after a daytime high of 27.2C landed Hastings the title of the hottest city in the country on Tuesday, with Napier a close second on 26C.
