Napier Mayor Bill Dalton says he will fight any plans to do away with a police station in the central city.
The Conservative Party's Napier candidate, Garth McVicar, presented Mr Dalton with a petition, signed by 448 people, requesting that the city's police station be kept open 24 hours a day, and that it not be moved to a combined emergency services base outside of the CBD.
Police have said they are considering a proposal to merge the station with other emergency services on the Fire Service site on Taradale Road.
They have said the Napier station has been closed occasionally late at night in recent months due to "operational requirements" and while they are carrying out a staffing review, there are no plans to reduce front-line officer numbers.
Mr Dalton said he welcomed the petition as evidence he could take to police to show the concern Napier people had about the issue of police resourcing, but was waiting until police confirmed their plans.
