Flaxmere's Waterworld will be closed after New Year for major upgrade and renewal work after repairs were identified in a report released over a year ago.
The problems first surfaced when the pool's manager noticed the cracks in a roof starting to get bigger, in September 2011. It was subsequently closed for inspection and temporary bracing was installed before the pool was reopened to the public.
An engineering report said an external structure around the existing timber portal would strengthen the central zone of the building. The strengthening of the roof along with other work would cost around $650,000.
Council acting community services and facilities manager Craig Thew said closing the pool was the most cost effective and least obtrusive to those who enjoy the pool. He said the work would start early in January next year and should be finished by the end of April.
Mr Thew said the council had also committed a further $570,000 to a major upgrade of the pool, to be done at the same time as the roof structure is strengthened.
