Four major projects will headline a forum being held today on the future of Flaxmere as part of an overdue makeover for the Hastings suburb.
The Hastings District Council is calling it the "Passport to Flaxmere's Future: Drop-In Day" which will be held at the Flaxmere Shopping Centre this afternoon.
Council staff will be available to discuss the four projects which include:
* An action plan for 10 years.
* The town centre upgrade.
* A management plan for Flaxmere's parks.
* The Paharakeke Project.
Flaxmere councillor Keriana Poulain said the projects were part of a long-term plan to upgrade Flaxmere and how it linked to the rest of the region.
Mrs Poulain said the council would look at the community as a whole, examining the cultural, economic and environmental aspirations of people who lived there.
It would then design public areas and community assets according to the needs of the community.
"It's proposed the four projects will complement each other but the council needs comprehensive input from residents for the plans to truly reflect the community's hopes for the future," Mrs Poulain said.
The town centre upgrade has been a hot topic lately after the Department of Corrections had planned to build a new community probation centre there.
With news the centre will now be built on the outskirts of the suburb, plans to upgrade the town centre can move forward.
It will include a new full-service supermarket and new streets, plus initiatives to encourage new business and people into a safe shopping centre.
Concept plans will be available at the drop-in day this afternoon.
The council said it was not responsible for redeveloping Flaxmere but wanted to provide some ideas and incentives for the community and developers.
Other community meetings will be held soon to further promote the changes being planned for Flaxmere and to generate public feedback and ideas.
It would include a hui at Te Aranga Marae in Flaxmere on May 25 to talk about the Paharakeke Project.
A community fair was planned at Flaxmere College on June 19, hosted by the Flaxmere Planning Committee and Flaxmere councillors Mrs Poulain and Henare O'Keefe.
The expo type event would showcase all four projects.
