Another innovative business from Raglan has seen success this summer, mixing a variety of creative flavours to make homemade iceblocks, which have been selling out over the hot months.
Maree Harris started Dizzy Blocks after "tinkering" with icecream over the years which lead to making iceblocks for a friend.
"I started playing with iceblocks and a friend wanted me to do some for her wedding. I [went on] to do a few markets and tested them. I've been playing with different flavours."
The business has started strong and the iceblocks in flavours such as orange, yoghurt and plum; watermelon, lime and mint; chocolate and salted caramel; mango lassi, and creamy chai have sold out over summer.
"I've just started really small ... I have two kids. I'm selling as many as I can make as I'd prefer to run out."
The summer has been a time for Maree to test the business model to see if it is a viable job.
She plans to head back to the drawing board over winter to expand the business but will still be available to make iceblocks to order.
The iceblocks are made from the best ingredients Maree can get her hands on at the time such as local, in-season fruit, and she tries to make at least one flavour with a natural sweetener and dairy free.
About eight flavours are available each week and are sold from her cart at the creative market in Raglan.
The name came from her son who is often called Dizzy.
"We call him Dizzy, which was his great grandfather's nickname."
She said the business has grown slowly and flavours are often tested by Dizzy to make sure there are kid-friendly blocks.
With a two-month old daughter, Maree is kept busy and jokes that her daughter's 'cute factor' helps with the iceblock sales.
The creative flavours are thought up by Maree with the help of cook books and her partner who is a former pastry chef.
"I tend to bounce ideas off him, otherwise it's just trial and error."
Maree said her aim is to do more events such as weddings, kids' birthday parties, and can make the 'blocks to suit dietary requirements and adjust the size for kids.
