Patrick Stewart stunned onlookers when he arrived at a Los Angeles event dressed in drag.

The veteran actor looked unrecognisable as the glamorous woman, complete with flowing white hair, pink satin wrap dress, multi-coloured jewelled necklace, as well as black kitten heels.

Patrick did not hold back when it came to his transformation and also wore a full face of make-up including oversized false eyelashes, bright pink lips, nails and a beauty spot.

"Something is happening in Hollywood tonight," Patrick tweeted alongside a selfie he had taken from the dressing room chair showing him fully made up while his wig is being secured by a stylist.

A number of fans on Twitter noticed a resemblance between Patrick and Dame Helen Mirren with one writing, "You look like Helen Mirren's older distinguished sister, and I have so many questions," while another posted, "Why's Dame Helen Mirren in your dressing room?!"

Patrick, 75, debuted his new look at a special screening and panel discussion to promote his US TV sitcom Blunt Talk, in which he plays a British broadcaster who moves to LA to host a nightly cable news show. He was joined by co-stars Jacki Weaver and Adrian Scarborough at the Los Angeles event.

Show creator Jonathan Ames recently revealed he was inspired by British newsman Piers Morgan and his former CNN show, saying, "I was channelling past CNN and happened to see Piers Morgan in front of a blue backdrop... In that moment, I thought Patrick Stewart would look amazing behind such a desk. We could live behind the scenes and create a world from there."
