George Clooney may be forced to make a double payment for love after his fiancée was spotted arriving at Heathrow airport wearing a brand new engagement ring.
It was reported that the Oscar-winning actor and director, 53, proposed to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin, 36, with a seven-carat diamond ring worth £415,900 (NZ$818,594) at his California home in April.
However Clooney may now face a £93,577 (NZ$184,182) bill from the UK taxman, after it emerged the British lawyer passed through customs at Heathrow on May 13 and may not have paid the relevant import tax.
HMRC rules dictate than any jewellery worth more than £390 (NZ$768) brought into the UK from outside the EU, is subject to VAT and customs duty.
A spokesman for Mr Clooney refused to disclose whether the actor's fiancée had stopped to pay the duty at the airport, telling the Daily Mail: "I have no idea of the validity of your story and I have no intention of even addressing it."
