X Factor leads the way

X Factor boy band Moorhouse, judge Stan Walker and Whenua Patuwai took their smooth sounds to at-risk youth held in a boys home in a bid to turn lives around.

The contestants used their new-found celebrity to inspire school-aged teenagers living at Auckland's Korowai Manaaki Youth Justice Residence, said X Factor publicist Chris Henry.

Child, Youth and Family hailed the afternoon a success and hoped it would be key to putting the troubled boys lives back on track.

"It might just be the little thing some of these young people needed to make the decision to get themselves out of it,'' said the CYF's home residential programme co-ordinator Emma-Louise Duncan.

She said teenagers in trouble with the law were often caught up in a dangerous group of friends and struggled to find direction in life.

Finding role models was pivotal in getting them back on track and often far more valuable than any service provided by CYF.

Henry said the boys were 'incredibly humbled' by the experience.

"They're only just coming to terms with realising being role models.''

He hoped telling their life stories and offering a fresh take on what was possible with passion and drive would serve as inspiration.
