"This is about to get real embarrassing" says Katy Perry at the beginning of her surprise cover of Ni**as in Paris, Jay-Z and Kanye West's megahit from their joint Watch the Throne album.
Looks like she got that right.
Perry, performing during a live session on BBC Radio 1, shocked fans with her cover of the pair's hyped rap song, in which she changed the lyrics to "ninjas in London" and censored all of the song's swear words.
Fans have slammed her version, criticising her use of what appears to be a British accent.
"What's up with the semi-British accent?" asked one commentator on YouTube, despite the song having more likes than dislikes.
"She needs to be stopped, NOW!!!" said another.
A third said: "I just watched Katy Perry butcher a rap song."
The sentiments were echoed on Twitter, where the performance was trending in the UK.
"Katy Perry covering Ni**as in Paris at Radio 1 is worse than Lana Del Rey's SNL performance," said user disco naïveté.
Others were kinder about the performance.
"You're the best, I love the fact that you always try? something different. You're the best, I love you Katy, don't let the haters bring you down, just have fun!"
After the performance, Katy Perry tweeted: "That was so fun. Can we do it again soon?"
Ni**as in Paris has become so popular Jay-Z and West were forced to perform it up to 11 times a night during a recent tour.
