The 27-year-old who tried to flee the scene after his car ploughed into two young girls on December 22 has appeared in the Manukau District Court this morning.
Fereti Aiono faces two charges of causing bodily harm while driving over the legal alcohol breath limit, driving while disqualified and failing to stop when someone was injured, after hitting the eight-year-old and 11-year-old girls in Manurewa on December 22.
He was granted interim name suppression yesterday so that he could inform his extended family. The suppression order has now lapsed.
Mr Aiono entered no plea during his brief appearance.
He again wore a green camouflage-patterned sweatshirt in court, and remained expressionless throughout the proceedings.
His next court appearance will be on February 8 and he will remanded in custody until then.
The accused's sister yesterday told APNZ the family had spoken to him briefly while he was in police custody and he is "devastated, not only for his family but for the other families".
