Daniel Vettori's lending support to Brendon McCullum during his first tour as Black Caps captain.

The veteran Black Caps spinner isn't with the squad in South Africa as he continues to be sidelined with an Achilles injury.

Vettori says he's very close to McCullum and will stay in contact with him.

"When you're a new captain you always question yourself whether what you're doing's right and so I suppose just a little bit of help in that area can make things a little bit easier."

Vettori is currently in Brisbane acting as an assistant coach for the Brisbane Heat in the Australian Twenty20 competition.

He's told ABC Radio his Achilles keeps flaring up.

"(I've) come over here to hang out with the Heat mainly but also to see a specialist and get a programme moving forward. It's going to be a few months yet before I'm back playing, but hopefully get it sorted once and for all now."
